  • 1965-1968: U. of New Brunswick, Fredericton (CN): assistant professor of German
  • 1968-1980: Antioch University, Yellow Springs, OH: assistant, from 1971 on associate professor of European Studies.
  • 1980-1981 (1983-1984 and Fall Semester of 1990): UC Berkeley, visiting professor of Dutch Studies, German Department
  • 1984-2001: U. of Antwerp: part time lecturer German Studies, Middle Eastern Studies and Philosophy.

  • 1997-1999: Brussels: director of a training school for labor organizers in the Belgian trade unions.

  • 2004: Member of the Royal Dutch Academy of Language and literature.
  • 2004-2005: Holder of the Willy Calewaert chair at the U. of Brussels.
